November is Native American Heritage Month. As part of the celebration the Library of Congress has a website with the stories of Native American Veterans. It’s as part of its Veterans History Project which collects the stories of the men and women who served their county. The first sentence on the page read, “American Indians have eagerly served a government which did not always keep its word to their ancestors.”

Since the early 1990s November has been proclaimed a month to celebrate the history and contributions of the original inhabitants of what is now the United States.

The first humans arrived on this continent about twenty thousand years ago; about sixteen thousand years later a new set of immigrants from began to show up in great numbers on its eastern shore. There was both cooperation and conflict between the new population and the old.
